Can a public school legally make you cut your hair?,?

my son has hair that lays on his shoulders but its curly so its kind of "big", and teachers make remarks about making him get his hair cut! this is crazy to me!!

It depends on the school and the district, but my high school had a rule on hair which went something like...

"...hair must be of an appropriate length and must not cause harm or a health risk to the individual or pose a threat or health risk to others around them..."

Of course, this can be open and subject to interpretation. What does the school perceive as a threat or health risk? It's all kind of subjective. I do think though as long as your son keeps his hair clean, and also keeps it restricted (i.e. tied back during sports) he should be fine.

Also, it may sound cheesy but he may want to look into perhaps getting some layers cut into his hair to reduce the bulk, or perhaps some de-frizzing product may help it not be so "big"

You should go to the school and rip apart the teacher for saying stuff about your son... Stand up for him... you should give him a mullet.. then see what the teacher says

This is difficult because I believe that they can - if it is stated in the rules and regulations of the school that hair should be a certain length. I agree its hard on your son but it will grow back

This teacher is playing with him about it, she /he has no say so in how long their hair is and so i wouldnt worry about it. the next time he goes to class have him wear a cap and tuck his hair in it and then when this teacher says glad to see u got your hair cut have him pull the cap off, and the joke is on the teacher.... a child boy or girl has the right to wear what kind of hair they want as long as it doesnt have any offensive signs cut into the hair...

It might keep him out of wood shop.

They can't make you or him do anything with his hair. The only way a teacher can is if he is in the Junior ROTC in High School and even then he doesn't have too but he'll fail that class.

It's his choice and in fact the teachers were wrong for even telling you this.

Yes, schools systems across the country are allowed to set appearence/dress codes for their students.

In Nanny States, anything is possible. Does it interfere with him learning or doing his work? Take her to the school board or sue them! Kids have been suspended from school for wearing natural hairstyles, braids you name it. As long as it is neat and clean it's none of their business in my book.

The military even allows people with long hair to wear wigs and stay within the guidelines of a military hair do without cutting it and you are free to wear it as you please off duty. People need to stop being so controlling and find some business of their own!
