I'm a dog groomer..... don't be scared with the clippers (i was when i first did it) press them against your arm while on, and you can feel how they feel against the dog - they wont cut or hurt unless you 'dig' them in.

Always go with the direction of the hair... for summer, use a number 7 or 5 blade, for the tricky areas like under their arms and legs, be careful, but still go with the flow of the hair. Any bits youre not sure, use the scissors - if youre not sure where the hair ends and the skin begins, gently pull the hair out until you see the pink of the skin, then you know where it is.

With the genital area, for females don't hit the vulva go around it and use scissor to neaten, with a male don;t hit the testies, if he doestn't have any the area between the legs are safe to go around and 'up' the penis area. Don't go near the end of the penis though. Use scissors to cut any yukky bits off the end - again pull the hair slightly if you need to know where the skin is.

It will take a few times for you to be confident, give yourself time...... you can always get a mobile groomer out the first time and watch them and ask questions, so you get the feel for it. Be honest with them and they should show you what they are doing. Not in a salon though as they don't like owners to watch!.

Be confident around the face area, if the blade is not touching the eyes, nose etc it wont hurt that area, keep the blades on the hair bits and go for it!!!!

Good luck, be confident and be careful with the scissors.

Try buying some 'comb attachents' for your clippers and using them over a #30 blade.

You can then leave the coat short but not shaved.

The coat must be clean and tangle free first.

Clip with the growth of the coat.
