How much do people that cut hair make?

I went and got my hair trimmed today at Cost Cutters in Walmart and the girl that cut my hair was talking about her boyfriend and how he works construction and puts in 50 - 60 hours a week and gets paid $700.00. Then she went on to say that she could make that much cutting hair in 35 hours. Is that true?

It seems like every time I get my hair done they want to go back to school or are going back to school to do something else. Seems to me if they made good money they would be content with what they are doing...

I believe it totally depends on the type of salon you're working at. I'm not sure about places like Cost Cutters that is a chain but I know that hair stylists at most salons set their prices, receive whatever their clients pay, and then they pay the salon rent every month for their share of the supplies and the space for their chair.

If you build up your book of clients and work at a nice salon then yes you could earn a very comfortable living. My stylist charges $50 just for a hair cut and blow dry/style plus it's customary to give a 15-20% tip. Not sure where you live but $40- $50 is pretty standard at a salon in S. FL. Based on what I know she charges for cut %26amp; color, and the amount of hours she works, tips, etc., I have no doubt that she makes at least $60-$70k a year. Everytime I go get a cut or color and pay my bill I think about how much she probably makes a year and how NOT stressful that job is compared to mine not to mention that I have a freakin' Masters degree! LOL But, I think she does a great job so I won't go anywhere else. I just don't tell my husband how much I spend on my hair. Shhh... ;)

It's probably because of the tips that she made. Usually for people to who do those type of jobs get even more money from tips.
